What is Geek Therapy?

Geek Therapy is the practice of using the psychology of geek cultural interests like video games, comic books, movies, tv shows, Dungeons & Dragons, anime, and more to improve oneself and others around us.

The utilization of video games in a therapeutic setting can help individuals or groups discover character identification techniques, learn internal motivations, develop a personal identity, and understand conscious and unconscious conflicts.

A tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG or pen-and-paper role-playing game) is a form of role-playing game (RPG) in which the participants describe their characters’ actions through speech. Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a set formal system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, players have the freedom to improvise; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the game.

Popular culture (also called mass culture and pop culture) is generally recognized by members of a society as a set of practices, beliefs, and objects that are dominant or prevalent in a society at a given point in time. Popular culture also encompasses the activities and feelings produced as a result of interaction with these dominant objects. Heavily influenced in modern times by mass media, this collection of ideas permeates the everyday lives of people in a given society. Therefore, popular culture has a way of influencing an individual’s attitudes towards certain topics.

Esports is the world of competitive gaming. Video gamers who participate in professional gaming tournaments or leagues have grown in popularity and are now as famous as other celebrities in entertainment. Esports leagues and tournaments are now being followed by millions of fans around the world and continue to grow each year. Understanding esports and professional gamers can provide many therapeutic benefits such as improving reactions to stressful situations, improving communication with others, and how to overcome failures or self disappointment.

Characters have deep and rich storylines where the imagination takes physical form. The supernatural powers characters have within their story worlds along with the sense of the narrative of their journeys make Anime a rich and important area to which to draw psychological material. By harnessing these characteristics, concepts, and features, the therapist can help to bring to light the pros and cons of individual behavior using the material found within anime.

Using fanfiction in therapy enables clients and therapists to rewrite the hero’s journey using narrative techniques. Since fanfiction is most often character-driven—getting inside the head of a character and asking “what if”—we can do the same with our clients, asking them to explore “what if” scenarios for themselves. For many clients, seeing themselves as the hero feels unfamiliar, and this is where fandom attachment or parasocial relationships can be uniquely helpful. With therapeutic support, they can begin to see their own heroism from the perspective of these beloved characters.

Individuals who see these characters on the big screen and also read about them across their varying iterations of comic books feel a deep connection to specific characters and their backstory. These variables are ripe for use in therapeutic practice and how to understand clients from a social point of view. The therapeutic power of imagination is evident in various therapy practices, specifically play therapy.

The rise of super heroes in multiple areas of daily life has created an entire area of untapped potential for therapeutic progress. As more movies are developed for the movie screen, their comics are becoming wanted in a higher than ever demand. Adults mistakenly think that Superhero play is solely for fun and games or to occupy time. Unbeknownst to many, through creative and imaginative play, clients are developing cognitively and emotionally while improving their self-worth, positive self-image, and communication skills.
